This prophecy movie is chilling in the reality that became evident in the 2000 elections. Its just a small step downwards, but if each election we slip downwards a small step, over many elections we end up dumber than we were 10, 20, 50 years ago. We've done our part here at The Other 95%. Mike, Eric and I have all reproduced.
We are calling for a rejuvenation of the scientifically literate populace! Do your duty and reproduce! Now, have at it.
It's sad, but true. The thing is, if you ever suggest something along the lines of who should and who should not procreate, you start stepping on a lot of toes, and starting coming off as being overly cold and scientific (or practical?). Oh well, let's just strip the earth bare and ignore things like carrying capacity.
I agree with Mike. A better solution will be to start teaching cephalopods how to use computers and hasten the coming of the Overlords. Humanity is busted.
It's worth taking a look at that movie (Idiocracy)- not the best film ever done, but conceptually brilliant, even if scarily not too far from the truth.
The problem too is that I'm guessing that none of us are planning on having a dozen kids. I know I'm not.
I know you are joking. But remember that Idiocracy is a satire. It is fun to laugh at and think about but it is far from the truth. It is the fallacious notion of the Marching Morons. How much of the supposed idiocy is due to societal norms and environment? How much is due to actual reduced mental capacity or defective genes? The former we can do a lot about with improved education. Toying with the latter will cause more problems than it solves. If you want to make a real difference, go tutor someone who needs help.
I agree with Jasnor. This movie is so stereotypical even environmental enrichment won't make it stop, and it's only US-centered which means anyone who takes this seriously is an idiot as well. The real problem is that if you really take it seriously and start a pregnancy playoff the earth's already dwindling resources will run out even quicker and then it wouldn't matter what's your IQ, you'll still suiffer, where's the point in that?
Kevin works at the Duke Marine Lab as a researcher at the Marine Conservation Molecular Facility studying the population genetics of vent fauna. He has an M.Sc. in Biology from Penn State where his research focused on marine invertebrate systematics and the community structure of chemoautotrophic foundation fauna at hydrothermal vents. Eric worked in Satellite communications, computers and design for many years, but returned to school to pursue his early love of marine sciences. He is curently working on his Masters in Biological Oceanography at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point Campus. Eric also photo-blogs at Larval Images, has a personal site at Eclectic Echoes and his images are available on Flickr.
Oh, man, I don't know whether to laugh my ass off or cry for the (not so distant) future.
